Family Day

Come by and visit Grace Rwanda at the Walnut Grove Family Day Fair this Saturday June 21, 10-4 p.m. at Walnut Grove Community Park.

We’ll be sharing a booth with the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise, who have been exceptional supporters of our cause. Stop by and check out our Rwandan crafts, chat with us about what’s new or learn how you can get involved.

The event promises to be a fun day of festive food, kid crafts and activities like hot air balloon rides and bouncy castles, plus a great live music lineup — including children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond — all for just $2 admission for adults, $1 for children, or $5 per family.

Summer’s coming, but the Grace Rwanda team isn’t on vacation. We’re hard at work preparing for upcoming projects and events.

First, a big thank you to everyone who voted for Elizabeth Johnson in the recent Canadian Immigrant Top 25 contest. The voting has now closed and the results will be announced June 24. We’re hoping Elizabeth wins the recognition she deserves!

We’ve been staying busy with community talks.

Elizabeth visited Heritage Woods Secondary School in Port Moody last week and gave a moving talk to students about her past in Rwanda, her recent visit, and the work of Grace Rwanda. If you’d like Elizabeth to speak at your school or community event please email her at Take a look to at our newly revamped web site to learn more about our school programs!

And Grace Rwanda will be out and about in the community this summer.

Look for us at the Walnut Grove Family Day event on Saturday, June 21. Stay tuned for details.

And please also come by and visit us at the Langley International Festival and Canada Day celebration from June 28-July 1. Check back for more information.

And if you’d like to get more involved in volunteering with the Grace Rwanda team this summer, please let us know. We’re having our end-of-fiscal-year board meeting on Sunday, June 1 in Langley from 4-6 p.m. New volunteers are always welcome! We gladly work with the skills you offer and the time you have. It’s a great way to get involved in your community and for students to earn school volunteering credits. Contact Elizabeth at to attend.

Grace Rwanda co-founder Elizabeth Johnson has been honoured by being named a finalist in Canadian Immigrant Magazine’s Top 25 Contest!
Elizabeth was selected as one of the country’s top 75 most inspiring immigrants for her community work in B.C. and for her work with Grace Rwanda bringing literacy to the children of Rwanda. She was selected from more than 630 entries submitted from across Canada, an impressive achievement on its own.
Now, Elizabeth needs your vote to ensure that she can be named one of Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants.

Voting opens March 25 and closes quite soon, on May 14th. You can only vote once, so please share the news and encourage your friends and family to vote too. It only takes a minute and it would mean so much to us. The winners will be announced in June.

Grace Rwanda speaks at three key events this January

Grace Rwanda co-founder Elizabeth Johnson will be sharing her lessons in leadership with B.C. youth this month. Johnson is due to speak to youth in Rotary International‘s Youth Adventure in Leadership program, which runs from Jan. 17-19th. She discusses the powerful leadership lessons to be learned from forgiveness in a talk titled, “The Power of Forgiveness.”

Later in the month, Grace Rwanda will be a featured participant in Missions Fest Vancouver, a Christian-focussed conference for organizations working on international aid and missions abroad. The event is being held  downtown at the Vancouver Convention Centre from Jan. 24-26th. We will be manning a booth there and hope to outreach and share our cause with other participants and like-minded non-profits. Johnson has also been asked to give a presentation to attendees Friday afternoon.

Grace Rwanda’s Missions Fest participation has been made possible by the generous support of Jan and Ray Martyn (pictured above.) The couple visited Rwanda on our distribution trip last summer and were inspired by our work in the field. They are sponsoring our conference fees and we’d like to extend our sincere thanks for their support.

Lastly, Grace Rwanda will be attending UBC‘s International Development Research Network on Jan. 30th to liaise with staff and work on partnerships.

It’s a busy month of events and presentations, but we are always happy to spread the word about Grace Rwanda’s work. If you know of an organization, school, community group, or business we should connect with email

The best thing about the holidays? Giving to others and making a real difference in their lives.

So, “This Holiday, Give A Library!”

Grace Rwanda has launched a new crowdfunding campaign to buy books for primary classrooms through Indiegogo.

We’re aiming to raise at least $1,000, to buy books for schoolchildren in Rwanda’s Muhanga district. We have until Dec 31 to do it.

Please help us give the gift of hope and literacy this season. Even small donations add up. Donations over $25 are tax deductible.

We’d love it if you’d also share our efforts online  on your social networks with your family and friends to help us spread the word — and spread a reading culture in Rwanda.

Have a look at our campaign page on Indiegogo. And click on the picture above to watch a short video on Grace Rwanda’s work!
